Mary had a little lamb. She loved it very much. In the day time she kept it tied to a tree in the fields and in the evening she went to lead it back home. One evening, however, she found the rope that tied the lamb to the tree had been cut and the lamb was nowhere to be found.
When her husband came back from work, she told him what had happened. Immediately her husband set out to look for the lamb. He was sure that he could find the lamb because the village they lived in was a very small one.
Mary’s husband heard that one of their neighbours, Aleko, had bought a new lamb. “Aleko must have stolen our lamb,” he said to himself. But when he got to Aleko’s house, he found he had made a mistake. In front of Aleko’s house there was a black lamb.
He was about to leave when it started to rain. He had to stay in Aleko’s house. When he came outside half an hour later, he was surprised to find that standing before him was the precious lamb he had been looking for. Aleko had dyed its wool black. Now it had been washed clean by the rain!
