A lion fell in love with a farmer’s daughter and wanted to marry her.
The farmer could not bear to give up his girl to the wild beast, but he dared not refuse.
So he told the lion that he could not accept him as the husband for his daughter unless he pulled out his teeth and cut off his claws, because his daughter was afraid of them.
The lion took this for a test of his love. To prove that he was really deeply in love with the daughter he readily submitted to these sacrifices.

Then the lion presented himself, without one single tooth and claw, hopefully in front of the farmer.
To his great surprise, the farmer, mentioning nothing about his promise, treated him with contempt and cudgelled him off.
